COMPETITORS

The first type of members are the competitors. HOSA is a competitive club with state and national competitions. In these competitions there are various competitive events. Some examples of popular competitions include: CPR/First Aid, HOSA Bowl, Dental Science, and so much more (20+ different kinds)! Many of these competitions are things that you will learn how to do in Ms. Toth's Health Science I and II. Competitive HOSA Members must pay the $15 membership fee to the Liberty Bookkeeper. The HOSA Oregon State Competition is usually held around the time of Spring Break. Competitive HOSA Members are expected to stay at the Doubletree Hotel by the Lloyd Center Mall in Portland for three days with Ms. Toth and attend the orientation events. Past competitors have described the suite experience as being much like a preview to college dorm life! If this is an issue, accommodations can be arranged. Competitions are held during these three days. Competitive HOSA Members MUST make a decision on what competition they would like to prepare for by the end of November. We ask that you please spend your free-time studying for these competitions if you wish to win an award. Every month, we will have a Competitors' Meeting to decipher the difficult task of signing-up and preparing members for State. Oregon is a state where HOSA Competitors must do online prerequisites if the competitive event asks for them and this has caused difficulties for Liberty's HOSA in the past.

It is encouraged that members stay at the Doubletree Hotel due to the fact that this is an opportunity for students to engage with other students of similar career interests in both a relaxed and competitive way. Everyone who is in HOSA is someone who is committed to health science and while it is a "competition," there are plenty of moments for competitors to interact and get to know each other. In fact, this is how most of the time will be spent as you will often find yourself having to wait for your competition to start.
